Eating Seasonally and Enjoying a Skin Safe Summer!

As an Ayurvedic Lifestyle instructor, I have learned to eat foods seasonally. In our feature article this month we learn about the basic principles of ayurveda and eating to maintain our balance. 

In the past year and a half, I have focused on healing my gut. Just making a commitment to reduce or eliminate certain foods from my diet has made me more aware of how my body reacts to these foods when I do eat them. We remember this feeling the next time we are faced with a choice of what to eat, and even though it tastes good, if it felt bad going down, it probably isn’t something we will choose to eat again. 

This month’s article featuring Mark Tager is enlightening when it comes to skincare and its connection to our food consumption. 

I have lived outdoors in the summer all my life, and I love the water, which is always close by here in Michigan. I paddle board, bike, swim and kayak—among other things. So, I get a full body scan annually to check for precancers, and I also use good sunscreen, wear a long sleeve lightweight hoodie and a hat. 

It’s difficult to think of our skin as an organ but it is and requires the same care that we take when making choices affecting our other precious organs. I have precancers removed annually and have had many Moh’s surgeries. It’s far easier to slather on a good sunscreen and keep it applied than to have someone cut and burn the sun’s harmful effects from one of our most precious organs down the road.
