About Natural Awakenings

Publishers Amy and Kyle Hass have a twofold commitmentyour successful use of Natural Awakenings for a better life, and the overall vitality of our local natural living community. They began using green products in their personal and professional lives 11 years ago. Today, their family continually seeks ways to tread more lightly on the Earth.

Amy’s love of nature started at a young age. Growing up with horses, she was always outside, riding any trail she could find. Her love of animals prompted her to pursue a degree in marine biology . She remarks, “The more I realized the connections among everything Mother Nature created, the more I had to act on the need to help the animals and the planet we share with them.”

Amy’s love for all things natural and her quest to make a vital impact on the environment began to rub off on Kyle when they married. But it was when Kyle’s mother lost her battle with cancer that a new facet of their mission took shape: They determined to also take a good look at what they were putting into their bodies.

Through the years, the pair had thought they were focused on living a righteous lifestyle.  But in reality, they had become caught up in busy days that prompted long hours and reliance on convenience foods. “We also failed to fully appreciate the outdoor activities that keep us in balance,” says Kyle.

Today, all of that has changed. Kyle and Amy eat a consistently organic diet and revel in the outdoor activities they enjoy together, which include biking, camping and canoeing.

When the West Michigan edition of Natural Awakenings became available in 2008, “We could not pass up this opportunity to share with our community this wealth of enjoyable ways to live healthier, more socially responsible lives,” says Amy. Born and raised in West Michigan, they are honored to be able to give back to their community through this magazine. They note, “We are grateful to Bill and Sara Peterson for cultivating this magazine into what it is today.”
